About Best Lawyers In America & The Selection Process
“Best Lawyers” is the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. During the voting process other attorneys are asked, “If you were unable to take a case yourself, how likely would you be to refer it to this nominee?” Because only lawyers previously selected to “Best Lawyers” may vote, legal professionals regard being selected as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” as a significant honor.
“Best Lawyers” compiles lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The Nomination and voting process for “Best Lawyers in America” is a five (5) step process including; nominations, peer review, analysis of feedback, eligibility check, and results released. This five step process is necessary to ensure the quality of the attorneys listed in the publication.
The nomination process beings with all the lawyers who were listed in the previous year’s publication being automatically nominated. Then clients, lawyers, and marketing teams nominate additional lawyers. The ballots are created based on these nomination to specifically include only the lawyers nominated in the voting lawyer’s geographical area to ensure the peer reviews are accurate and distributed to lawyers currently listed so they may vote.
During the voting process the lawyers are asked, “If you were unable to take a case yourself, how likely would you be to refer it to this nominee?” Nominees are given a 1-5 rating and the voters may leave additional comments. Once the votes are in the “Best Lawyers” staff tallies the votes and checks the selected lawyers against their State Bar Associations to ensure the lawyers are in good standing. Finally, listed lawyers are notified of their inclusion and the list is released to the public.
