Worst States
The three states with the worst drivers are Maine, South Carolina, and Nebraska. While Maine and Nebraska both have issues with a large increase in traffic citations from 2016 to 2017. Omaha, Nebraska has also claimed the title for worst drivers in the country as another study has shown. On the other hand, South Carolina‘s poor rank is due to a large increase in DUIs. Almost half of all fatal crashes in South Carolina involved an impaired driver.
Best States
The top three states with the best drivers include Michigan, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. Michigan and Oklahoma drivers are in the top because of their decrease in speeding, citations, and fatalities last year. Unlike South Carolina, Mississippi saw a decrease in DUIs, fatal crashes, and speeding. Still Mississippi has an issue with buckling up, half of the state’s fatal car crashes had riders or drivers with unbuckled seatbelts.
Being a bad driver can be dangerous, frustrate others on the road, and cause an increase in insurance rates. In the states with the worst drivers, insurance rates are likely to be high. Even if you are a great driver, those surrounding bad drivers create a higher risk of an auto accident. Insurance companies base their offered rates off drivers in the same area.
