Leyda Castro was born and raised in San Cristóbal, Táchira, Venezuela, a city that is surrounded by mountains that she still calls her favorite place in the world. Surrounded by family and inspired by her community, Leyda built a passion for justice and service early on. When political and economic challenges arose in Venezuela, she made the life-changing decision to move to the United States to build a better future for herself and her family and to continue her legal career.
Leyda earned her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Universidad Católica del Táchira, graduating fifth in her class. She later attended Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, where she obtained her Master of Laws (LL.M.) with a concentration in Corporate and Commercial Law. While at McKinney, she earned Dean’s List honors and graduated with distinction. Leyda is licensed to practice law in both Venezuela and Indiana.
During law school, Leyda completed over 50 hours of pro bono service, assisting tenants facing eviction in small claims court in Lawrence, Indiana. This experience strengthened her compassion for others and reinforced her desire to use the law to protect people in difficult circumstances. She also participated in the Hispanic Law Society, where she connected with bilingual attorneys and worked to bridge gaps in access to justice for Spanish-speaking clients.
At Hurst Limontes, Leyda focuses on personal injury law, combining her understanding of corporate compliance and insurance coverage with her passion for helping individuals navigate the aftermath of an accident. She values building strong personal connections with her clients through learning their stories, understanding their challenges, and earning their trust through communication and care.
Leyda is a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Division and plans to join the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her niece, Valerie, and her dog, Kiro, working out, watching movies, and creating social media content to help others, especially international attorneys, learn about the process of becoming licensed in the U.S. She and her husband, Konrad Schmid, both practice law at Hurst Limontes and are passionate about serving Indiana’s growing Latino community.
