The Indiana State Police have recently announced an increased patrol presence that will continue throughout Thanksgiving and the holiday season as part of the annual Safe Family Travel Campaign. Troopers are now working overtime and will be on the lookout for drivers not wearing seat belts, driving while intoxicated, speeding, and other traffic violations.
The statewide initiative is supported by grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who have noted that Thanksgiving Eve (“Blackout Wednesday”) has become associated with alcohol-impaired driving when many serious accidents and injuries occur. If you have plans and they involve alcohol, it’s extremely important to have a designated driver or to use a rideshare service.
For those who will be driving, take extra precautions to ensure the safety of you and others, which include buckling up, refraining from smartphone use, keeping both hands on the wheel, and avoiding distractions.
Historically, data from the the National Safety Council (NSC) indicates an average of approximately 460 traffic fatalities during the Thanksgiving weekend. Additionally, according to the Indiana State Police, the Hoosier State had over 2,400 crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period last year.
